What do those cars actually do?

Perhaps you have seen one of our mobile mapping vehicles driving through your street. These cars collect images and location data of roads and public spaces. This helps local authorities and infrastructure professionals better understand, manage, and maintain the environment.

The vehicles use panoramic cameras and LiDAR scanners to create an accurate digital representation of the surroundings. This information can be used to inspect traffic signs, street lighting, road conditions, and other objects in public spaces.

That is why privacy is an important part of our process.

We understand that people wonder what happens to their personal data.

Before images are used or shared, all recognizable faces and license plates are automatically blurred. This means that individuals and vehicles cannot be identified in the images. Our process is designed to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

AI-InfraSolutions is a Dutch company. Since our start in 2018, the data we collect in the Netherlands is also stored in the Netherlands. We also work with our partners in other countries to make sure data there is also kept locally. This gives our customers and stakeholders more control, safety, and confidence, especially given what is currently happening in the world.

The purpose of mobile mapping is not to identify people. The goal is to improve public spaces. By collecting this information once and using it for multiple purposes, infrastructure professionals can work more efficiently, reduce unnecessary site visits, and make better decisions about roads, safety, and infrastructure.

Why we do this

Mobile mapping helps make your country safer, more sustainable, and better maintained. A current and clear view of roads and public spaces makes it possible to detect problems earlier. This may include missing or damaged traffic signs, unsafe road conditions, worn road markings, or infrastructure that requires maintenance.

Identifying these problems early contributes to road safety. It also helps local authorities plan maintenance more effectively, before issues become larger, more costly, and more disruptive.

Sustainability is an important part of our approach. We increasingly use electric vehicles for our mapping activities. By collecting reliable data once and using it for multiple purposes, we also help reduce unnecessary visits and duplicate inspections. This results in lower CO₂ emissions.

Our data also supports various other sectors — for example, by helping the energy sector manage the national energy grid more efficiently.
